Spanish term

raíces reservantes

Spanish to English Science Botany A food science technical paper on impregnating yacon with aloe vera

I can't find 'raíces reservantes' in any Proz glossary, nor online. Google translates it as 'storage root' and somewhere I've seen 'rootstock'. Any thoughts gratefully received.

Discussion

Charles Davis Aug 21, 2015:
But be careful... They are not tubers: a tuber is a modified stem, not a root. A potato is a tuber; a sweet potato is a tuberous root.
Charles Davis Aug 21, 2015:
Strictly speaking... "The term 'tuberous roots' is used by several authors for roots capable of storage root formation"
The Sweetpotato, p.15

The two terms, raíz reservante (or de reserva) and raíz tuberosa, also exist in Spanish, and are similarly more or less synonymous.

storage roots

(A) Nabo, Brassica rapa var. rapa (B) Celidonia menor, Ranunculus ficaria, (C) Rutabaga, Brassica napobrassica, (D) Batata, Ipomoea batatas, (E) Rabanito, Raphanus sativus, (F) Zanahoria, Daucus carota."

"A storage organ is a part of a plant specifically modified for storage of energy (generally in the form of carbohydrates) or water [...]
In common parlance, underground storage organs may be generically called roots, tubers, or bulbs, but to the botanist there is more specific technical nomenclature:
True roots:
Tuberous root or root tuber — e.g. Dahlia
Storage taproot — e.g. carrot"

"Storage roots: these roots are modified for storage of food or water, such as carrots and beets. They include some taproots and tuberous roots."

tuberous roots

storage roots is also a possibility, see:

A ****tuberous root or storage root****, is a modified lateral root, enlarged to function as a storage organ. The enlarged area of the root-tuber, or storage root, can be produced at the end or middle of a root or involve the entire root. It is thus different in origin but similar in function and appearance to a stem tuber. Examples of plants with notable tuberous roots include the sweet potato, cassava, and dahlia.

Root tubers are perennating organs, thickened roots that store nutrients over periods when the plant cannot actively grow, thus permitting survival from one year to the next. The massive enlargement of secondary roots typically represented by Sweet Potato (Ipomoea batatas), have the internal and external cell and tissue structures of a normal root, they produce adventitious roots and stems which again produce adventitious roots.[10]

Compare with the equivalent page in Spanish.
