Discussion

@Herbet No. It's the actual thick liquid glaze or that same glaze once it has dried on the ceramic it has been applied to, but before firing. Through the firing process, the slip is transformed into a glaze.

However, the word "slip" is also used for thick liquids other than glazes, such as liquified clay used for slip casting ceramics and clay slips used for embossed patterns etc.

@BD
A "couche" ???
B D Finch Aug 11, 2015:
@Herbet "Slip", in this context, doesn't mean "passage". In ceramics, a slip is a thick liquid that will coat any unfired pottery dipped into it.
HERBET Abel Aug 11, 2015:
@Tony
I see now
Slip would mean 'passage" en barbotine" eg. which is also a "runny slurry"
Tony M Aug 10, 2015:
@ Abel No, I purposely didn't even attempt to translate 'glaze' — I thought the term giving Asker a problem might be 'slip', which is the only term I referred to.
HERBET Abel Aug 10, 2015:
@Tony
An "engobe" is not "glazing", barbotine yes
Tony M Aug 10, 2015:
In case it helps... 'slip' is a kind of thick but runny liquid, term used in ceramics; a sort of 'slurry' in a way. Apparently that's 'engobe' in pottery (dixit R+C)
