@Nikko Comme vous voyez, nous sommes très partagés sur la question. Comment traduire votre terme, notamment par un terme considéré d’être « franglais » par quelques pairs, le cas échéant, ou non, courant dans le jargon technique.

Pouvez-vous nous répondre aux questions suivantes ?

- Le texte cité comme référence première dans mon proposition, est-il le texte source ou provient’il d'une autre société?
- Parlons-nous d'une fiche ou d’un connecteur électrique qui nécessite un entretien régulier?
- Quelles pièces de la fiche nécessitent un entretien de quelle sorte?
Je pense au remplacement des douilles, à l’engraissement des broches et/ou l’examen des bornes, mais pas à un rechange de la fiche.

@ Germaine I couldn't agree more with you, at least on the EN terms (which are the only ones I'm qualified to comment on!)
'serviceable' in the sense intended here means 'can be serviced' — this use of the '-able' suffix sounds a little unnatural at times in EN (though I see it is used quite inventively in FR!), which is I think why people get confused here with the more traditional 'serviceable' = 'fit for service'.

Likewise, 'maintainable' is a fairly modern word, I believe — certainly not one that I ever heard when I started in electronics maintenance 40 years ago! And the ways I've seen it used seem mainly to relate (more or less closely) to IT applications, where 'maintenance' takes on a whole new meaning. It's a bit like the word 'upgradeable', and both of these terms, at least in my admittedly limited experience, tend to be jargon used in and around computing and related contexts.
Like you, I have rarely seen these disputed FR terms used other than in situations where they are a simple calque on the EN term, or an attempt at franglais. It's very difficult to find 'pure' native FR sites out there using them, since almost all the occurrences I looked into (by no means an exhaustive list

(suite) C'est après avoir eu le « courage » de vérifier dans le Larousse, le Littré et le GDT (en ligne), le Robert des difficultés, le Lexis (76000 mots dont vocabulaire technique et scientifique), le Colpron, le Grand Robert & Collins, le Webster's Encyclopedic Dictionnary et même le Bélisle que je me suis permis d'avancer que « maintenable » et « entretenable » n'existent pas en français. Ce n’est pas par ignorance : c’est un simple constat.

Il ne m'appartient pas de vous expliquer l'étymologie, les désinences, les suffixes, les nuances et les subtilités de la langue. Je vous laisse le soin d’explorer, par exemple, le Lexis (publié par Larousse) à cet égard. Pour l’instant, je maintiens ma position.

Johannes, Vous avez prouvé que vous avez trouvé, sur wiktionary, le mot "maintenable". Comme je vous l'ai expliqué plus tôt, cela n'en fait pas:
- un mot "purement français" (i.e. qu'on trouve dans n'importe quel dictionnaire courant avec le sens recherché),
- un terme pertinent dans le contexte soumis (un texte technique, certes, mais surtout publicitaire) et
- un terme qui ne porte pas à interprétation/qui ne soit pas équivoque dans le contexte, i.e. que tout francophone va comprendre comme voulant dire "dont on peut faire l'entretien".
Au mieux, on a ici un anglicisme sémantique (maintainable (qu'on ne trouve qu'en ligne) > maintenable), en somme, du franglais. Et l'utilisation éventuelle de ce mot dans une mine entre techniciens n'en fait pas un terme souhaitable dans un texte publicitaire.

@ Germaine J'ai prouvé que mes propositions est purement français par référence aux dictionnaires, par l’étymologie des mots et des occurrences, surtout dans les monde de technique.

Il est donc très courageux de prétendre qu’un certain mot n’existe pas en Français. Ne pas connaître un certain terme n’est pas de preuve. Il manque donc la justification pour la désapprobation.

En termes technique, la maintenance n’a pas le sens de « maintenir une position, un état », mais de rétablir un machine ou équipement. Voir Wikipedia :

Selon la définition de l'AFNOR, la maintenance vise à maintenir ou à rétablir un bien dans un état spécifié afin que celui-ci soit en mesure d'assurer un service déterminé1.
La maintenance regroupe ainsi les actions de dépannage et de réparation, de réglage, de révision, de contrôle et de vérification des équipements matériels (machines, véhicules, objets manufacturés, etc.) ou même immatériels (logiciels).

Johannes Comme votre première définition l'indique, "maintenable" serait dérivé de "maintenir". Un francophone qui lit ce terme lui donnera tout probablement le sens de "qui peut prendre/garder/maintenir une position, un état", puisque c'est le sens premier qu'on donne à "maintenir" en français. Même un anglophone pourrait associer maintenable à maintainable et faire le même lien quant au sens - Cf. http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/maintainable

Quant à la dernière définition "qualité d'un système matériel ou logiciel dont la maintenance est assez simple", ça s'apparente assez à un anglicisme sémantique; c'est du "jargon" qu'on développe dans certains milieux, mais de là à en faire un terme "français" courant dont le sens serait reconnu par le plus grand nombre de "francophones", je crois qu'il y a encore un grand pas à faire... En tout cas, c'est mon opinion et je la partage! ;-)

Vous savez, les gens disent "je vais te forwarder l'info... (2540 Ghits) te shipper l'appareil... " (25 600 000 Ghits) . Ça ne veut pas dire que tous les hits sont pertinents et, le cas échéant, ça ne fait pas du mot un mot "français" à introduire dans nos traductions peu importe le registre.

Ici, « serviceable » est utilisé dans le sens de « maintenance » qui veut dire apporter l’entretien/les réparations nécessaires pour maintenir l’objet en condition, en état d’opération.

My understanding Although this is a bit outside my specialist field, my instinctive understanding would be that this is referring to the contacts of these couplers (e.g. individual pins or sockets), which can be 'serviced' from the front (i.e. mating) end of the 'coupler' (= connector) — i.e. without having to dismantle the whole thing to get at them from the back, which would be the more traditional way of going about it.

@ Asker I wasn't asking you to identify the specific model of equipment (BTW, there's nothing in KudoZ rules to prevent you posting brand names; you are simply advised against posting confidential information, which might include the fact that you happen to be working for XYZ customer).
All I wanted to know is what general type/sort/kind of equipment this is? Your overall field of HV equipment is far too vast for that to be a lot of help, we do need to narrow it down a bit; in particular, I suspect this may be some type of equipment very specific to the mining field? Although you may not realize it, this does potentially make a technical difference which could affect the translation.
