French term

pente

French to English Tech/Engineering Energy / Power Generation

Discussion

chris collister Jun 26, 2014:
In mathematical terms, "gradient" and "slope" are virtually interchangeable. However, if the slope of a function is not constant (eg a parabola), it is more common to refer to a "local gradient" than to a "local slope" when drawing attention to a particular point on the graph.

slope

Although the overall context is not entirely clear, the meaning of this term seems unambiguous — we are clearly talking about a varying value, for which the slope of the variation must not exceed 1% per second.

agree lucyab : Pressure slope is a term I have seen before corresponding to a rate, so it seems to fit here.

Thanks, Lucy!
agree chris collister : gradient and slope are pretty much interchangeable in most cases//Quite so, but any "field gradient" can be represented graphically, at least in 2-D

Thanks, Chris! Yes, for a curve; but need to be wary of 'pressure gradient' in the physical sense.

rate

I think this fits better than 'graph' or 'slope' for this doc.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Tony M : For it to correspond to 'slope', it would really need to be 'rate of change'.
