XXX’s courage, doggedness, healthy balance of patience and impatience, plus good, old-fashioned grit, should inspire all of us.

: "bonne dose de cran", I think "à l'ancienne" is unnecessary here although it would be an option to translate "old-fashioned". I personally don't see the necessity in translating it though, it sounds a little loaded.

: "à l'ancienne" n'est pas idiomatique ni nécessaire ici. J'aime bien "une bonne DOSE de cran" :)

"à l'ancienne" does not seem unnecessary to me here, because the sentence sounds like the funeral oration of XXX, or a speech to XXX's retirement...

: pour moi "cran" = guts; "grit" = ténacité, refus de baisser les bras

: And from the way it is worded in this list, it is one of XXX's characteristics (that should inspire us), so I'm not sure that one can really add 'une bonne dose de...'

Comment: "J'ai finalement decide de dire une bonne dose de cran - sans ajouter à l'ancienne. Merci! C'était bien vu."

his good old-fashioned grit
son bon vieux cran d'autrefois
Would that be a way of working in the 'good old-fashioned' bit, while preserving the list structure?

This suggestion, apparently not liked by some, is however taken directly from the esteemed Robert + Collins dictionary.
Now I'm not saying it is the ideal situation in this particular instance — but I certainly don't think it can be merely dismissed out of hand.

In the s/t, there is a great deal of meaning conveyed by 'good, old-fashioned', and to simply ignore it / omit it completely will, I fear, inevitably dilute and distort the meaning.
Naturally, I bow to our FR-native-speaking colleagues when it comes to the best way to express it — but I do insist that it does need to be rendered by some means or other.

Thanks, Victoria! Maybe... not sure if that's adding a notion that is not there in the s/t — but at least it's not leaving one out ;-)
