Segundo o contexto da frase, parece que eles não conseguem manter um padrão de vida constante por isso o "single lifestyle". Bom, essa sugestão é do que eu entendi, não teve alguma referência específica.

"Strapped" é uma maneira de dizer "broke" ou "short on money". Só sabendo o contexto que eu posso traduzir "elegante" mas a frase completa seria, "They're fashionable, but they live strapped, in order to keep up a lifestyle they can no longer afford."
