Precyzyjne zdefiniowanie w języku polskim angielskiego terminu corporate governance wywołuje wiele trudno¶ci. Dotychczas nie powstało jedno okre¶lenie, oddaj±ce tre¶ć angielskiego zwrotu. W literaturze przedmiotu używa się wielu nazw, np. nadzór wła¶cicielski, nadzór korporacyjny, nadzór nad działalno¶ci± spółek, kontrola nad spółk±, kontrola nad zarz±dzaniem .
