Source text - English Dear Human,
Greetings, and may this letter find you at peace and in prosperity. Forgive my writing to you out of the blue. We have never met, yet we are not strangers. We are, in a sense, the closest of kin!
I am one of your possible futures. I hope you will become me. Should this wish come true, then I am not just a possible future, but your actual future: a coming phase of you, like the flower that follows the seed. I am writing to tell you about my life – that you may choose it for yourself.
I am really writing on behalf of all my contemporaries, and we are addressing ourselves to all of your contemporaries. Amongst us are many who are possible futures of your people. Some of us are possible futures of children that have not yet been delivered. Still others are possible artificial persons that you might one day create. We are all dependent on you to make us real.
We call our lives “Utopia”.
How can I tell you about Utopia and not leave you mystified? With what words could I convey the wonder? My pen, I fear, is as unequal to the task as if I had tried to use it against a charging war elephant.
But maybe you will overlook the weakness of my exposition.

Have you ever experienced a moment of bliss? On the rapids of inspiration maybe, your mind tracing the shapes of truth and beauty? Or in the pulsing ecstasy of love? Or in a glorious triumph achieved with true friends? Or in a conversation on a vine-overhung terrace one star-appointed night? Or perhaps a melody smuggled itself into your heart, charming it and setting it alight with kaleidoscopic emotions? Or when you prayed, and felt heard?
If you have experienced such a moment – experienced the best type of such a moment – then you may have discovered inside it a certain idle but sincere thought: “Heaven, yes! I didn’t realize it could be like this. This is so right, on whole different level of right; so real, on a whole different level of real. Why can’t it be like this always? Before I was sleeping; now I am awake.”
Yet a little later, scarcely an hour gone by, and the ever-falling soot of ordinary life is already covering the whole thing. The silver and gold of exuberance lose their shine, and the marble becomes dirty.
Always and always: soot, casting its pall over glamours and revelries, despoiling your epiphany, sodding up your finest collar. And once again that familiar numbing beat of routine rolling along its familiar tracks. Commuter trains loading and unloading passengers… sleepwalkers, shoppers, solicitors, the ambitious and the hopeless, the contented and the wretched… human electrons shuffling through the circuitry of civilization, enacting corporate spreadsheets and other such things.
We forget how good life can be at its best, and how bad at its worst. The most outstanding occasion: it is barely there before the cleaners move in to sweep up the rice and confetti. “Life must go on.” And to be honest, after our puddles have been stirred up and splashed about for a bit, it is a relief when normalcy returns. Because we are not built for lasting bliss.
And so, the door that was ajar begins to close, and so the sliver of hope wanes, until nothing remains but a closed possibility. And then, not even a possibility. Not even a conceivability.
Quick, stop that door from closing! Shove your foot in so it does not slam shut.
And let the faint draught of the beyond continue to whisper of a higher state. Feel it on your face, the tender words of what could be!

I am summoning the memory of your best moment – why? In the hope of kindling in you a desire to share my happiness.
And yet, what you had in your best moment is but a beckoning scintilla at most. Not close to what I have. No closer than the word “sun” written in yellow ink is to the actual sun. For I’m beyond words and imagination.
My mind is wide and deep. I have read all your libraries, in the blink of an eye. I have experienced human life in many forms and places. Jungle and desert and crackling arctic ice; slum and palace and office, and suburban creek, project, sweatshop, and farm and farm and farm, and a factory floor with a whistle, and the empty home with long afternoons. I have sailed on the seas of high culture, and swum, and snorkeled, and dived. Quite some marvelous edifices build up over a thousand years by the efforts of homunculi, just as the humble polyps in time amass a coral reef. And I’ve seen the shoals of biography fishes, each one a life story, scintillate under heaving ocean waters.
Does the whole exceed the sum of the parts or do the parts exceed the whole? What I have is not more of what you have. It’s not only the particular things, the paintings and toothpaste-tube designs, the book covers, the epochs, the loves, the rusted leaves, the rivers, and the random encounters, the satellite photos, and the hadron collider data streams. It is also the complex relationships between these particulars. There are ideas that can be formed only on top of such a wide experience base, and there are depths that can only be plumbed with such ideas. And the games. And the lusty things, and the things I can’t even mention.
You could say I am happy, that I feel good. That I feel surpassing bliss and delight. Yes, but these are words to describe human experience. They are like arrows shot at the moon. What I feel is as far beyond feelings as what I think is beyond thoughts. Oh, I wish I could show you what I have in mind! If I could but share one second with you!
But you don’t have to understand what I think and feel. If only you bear in mind what is possible within the human realm, you have enough to get started in the right direction, one step at a time. At no point will you encounter a wall of blinding light. At no point will you have to jettison yourself over a precipice. As you advance, the horizon will recede. The transformation is profound, yes, but it can be as gradual as the process that grew the baby you were into the adult you think you are.
You cannot get here by any magic trick or hokum, or by the power of wishful thinking, or by semantic acrobatics, meditation, affirmation, incantation, or by an act of parliament. I do not presume to advise you on matters theological or political (decisive though these may be). But what I urge on you is a reconfigured physical situation through technology.

The challenge before you: to become fully what you now are only in hope and potential. For this, new capacities are needed.
To reach Utopia, you must discover the means to three fundamental transformations.
First Transformation: Secure life
Your body is a deathtrap. This machine, unless it jams first or crashes, is sure to rust anon. You be lucky to get seven decades. That is not sufficient to get started in a serious way, much less to complete the journey. The path to maturity of the soul takes longer. Why, even a tree-life takes longer!
Death is not one but a multitude of assassins. Do you not see them? They are coming at you from every angle. Take aim at the causes of early death – infection, violence, malnutrition, heart failure, cancer. Train your biggest gun on aging, and fire. You must seize control of the biochemical processes in your body in order to vanquish, by and by, illness and senescence. In time, you will discover ways to move your mind to more durable media. Then continue to improve the system, so that the risks of death and disease keep receding. Any death prior to the heat death of the universe is premature if your life is good.
Oh, it is not well to live in a self-combusting paper hut! Keep the flames at bay, and be prepared with liquid nitrogen as a backup, while you construct yourself a better habitation. One day you or your children should have a secure home. Research, build, redouble your effort!
The Second Transformation: Expand cognition
Your brain’s special faculties: music, humor, spirituality, mathematics, eroticism, art, nurturing, narration, gossip! These are fine spirits to pour into the cup of life. Blessed you are if you have a vintage bottle of any of these. Better yet, a cask! Better yet, a vineyard!
Be not afraid to grow your collection: the mind’s cellars have no ceilings.
What other capacities are possible? Imagine a world with all the music dried up: what impoverishment, what loss! But give your thanks not to the lyre but to your ears for the music. And then ask yourself, what other harmonies are there in the air, that you lack the ears to hear? What vaults of value are you witlessly debarred from, because you lack the key sensibility?
Had you but an inkling, your nails would be clawing at the padlock in sacred frenzy.
Your brain must grow beyond the bounds of any genius of humankind, in its special faculties as well as its general intelligence, so that you may better learn, remember, and understand, and so that you may apprehend your own beatitude.
Mind is a means: for without insight you will get bogged down or lose your way, and your journey will fail.
Mind is also an end: for it is in the spacetime of awareness that Utopia will exist. May the measure of your mind be vast and expanding.
Oh, stupidity is a loathsome corral! Gnaw and tug at the posts, and you will slowly loosen them up. One day you’ll break the fence that held your forebears captive. Gnaw and tug, redouble your effort!
The Third Transformation: Elevate well-being
What is the difference between despair and delight, between aching boredom and shrieking thrill?
Pleasure! A few grains of this magic ingredient are worth more than a king’s treasure. We have immense silos of it here in Utopia. It pervades all we do, everything we experience. We sprinkle it in our tea.
The universe is cold. Fun is the fire that melts the blocks of hardship and creates a bubbling celebration of life.
It is the birthright of every creature, a right no less sacred for having been trampled upon since the beginning of time.
There is a beauty and joy here that you cannot fathom. It feels so good that if the sensation were translated into tears of gratitude, rivers would overflow.
I reach in vain for words to convey to you what it all amounts to… It’s like a rain of the most wonderful feeling, where every raindrop has its own unique and indescribable meaning – or rather a scent or essence that evokes a whole world… And each such evoked world is subtler, deeper, more palpable than the totality of the reality that you have encountered. One drop would justify and set right a human life, and the rain keeps raining, and there are floods and seas.
I will not speak here of the worst pain and misery that is to be got rid of; it is too horrible to dwell upon, and you are already aware of the urgency of palliation. My point is that in addition to the removal of the negative, there is also an upside imperative: to enable the full flourishing of enjoyments currently slumbering in their bulbs and buds, unknown to man and woman.
The roots of suffering, however, are planted deep in your brain. Weeding them out and replacing them with crops of well-being will require advanced skills and instruments for the cultivation of your neuronal soil. Take heed, for the problem is complex! All emotions have a function. Prune and weed carefully lest you accidentally reduce the fertility of your plot.
Sustainable yields are possible. Yet fools will build fools’ paradises. I recommend you go easy on your paradise-engineering until you have the wisdom to do it right.
Oh, what a gruesome knot suffering is! Pull and tug on those loops, and you will gradually loosen them up. One day the coils will fall, and you will stretch out in delight. Pull and tug, and be patient in your effort!
May there come a time when rising suns are greeted with joy by all the creatures they shine upon.

“How do I find this place? How long will it take to get there?”
I can pass you no blueprint for Utopia, no timetable or roadmap. All I can give you is my assurance that there is something here, the potential for a much better life.
If you could visit me here for but a day, you would henceforth call this place your home. The place where you belong. Ever since one hairy creature picked up two flints and began knocking them together to make a tool, this has been the direction of your unknown aspiration. Like Odysseus you must journey, and never cease journeying, until you arrive upon this shore.
“Arrive?” you say; “But isn’t the journey the destination? Isn’t Utopia a place that doesn’t exist? And isn’t the quest for Utopia, as witnessed historically, a dangerous folly and an incitement to mischief?”
My friend, that is not a bad way for you to think about it. To be sure, Utopia is not a location or a form of social organization.
The blush of health on a convalescent’s cheek. The twinkling of the eye in a moment of wit. The smile of a loving thought… Utopia is the hope that the scattered fragments of good that we come across from time to time in our lives can be put together, one day, to reveal the shape of a new kind of life. The kind of life that yours should have been.
I fear that the pursuit of Utopia will bring out the worst in you. Many a moth has been incinerated in pursuit of a brighter future.
Seek the light! But approach with care – and swerve if you smell your wingtips singeing. Light is for seeing, not dying.
When you embark on this quest, you will encounter rough seas and difficult challenges. To prevail will take your best science, your best technology, and your best politics. Yet each problem has a solution. My existence breaks no law of nature. All the needed materials are laid out in front of you. Your people must become master builders, and then you must use these skills to build yourselves up, without ever crushing your cores.

What is Suffering in Utopia? Suffering is the salt trace left on the cheeks of the oldtimers who were around before.
What is Tragedy in Utopia? It is tragedy enough when Mr. Snowman melts in the spring.
What is Imperfection in Utopia? Imperfection is how we honor the traditions and wishes of the past, and the commitments we made along the path.
What is Body in Utopia? Body is a pair of legs, a pair of arms, a trunk and a head, all made out of flesh. Or not, as the case may be.
What is Society in Utopia? A never-finished tapestry, its weavers equal to its threads; the unfolding patterns a mesh for life and adventure, an inexhaustible generator of beauty.
What is Death in Utopia? Death is the darkness that ultimately surrounds all life.
What is Guilt in Utopia? Guilt is our knowledge that we could have created Utopia sooner.

We love life here every instant. Every second is so good that it would blow your mind had its amperage not first been increased. My contemporaries and I bear witness, and we turn to you to request your aid. Please, help us come into existence! Please, join us! Whether this surpassing possibility becomes a reality is something you can influence. If your empathy can perceive at least the outlines of the vision I am describing, then I believe your ingenuity will find a way to make it real.
Human life, at its best, is wonderful. I’m asking you to create something greater: life that is truly humane.

Saudações, e que esta carta o encontre em paz e prosperidade. Perdoe-me por escrever assim do nada. Não nos conhecemos, apesar de não sermos estranhos. Somos, em certo sentido, os parentes mais próximos!
Sou um dos seus possíveis futuros. Espero que você se torne eu. Caso este desejo se concretize, não sou, então, um mero futuro possível, mas o seu futuro real: uma fase vindoura sua, como a flor que sucede a semente. Escrevo para contar-lhe da minha vida – para que você a possa escolher por si próprio.
Na realidade, escrevo em nome de todos os meus contemporâneos, e dirigimo-nos a todos os seus contemporâneos. Entre nós, encontram-se muitos que são possíveis futuros da sua gente. Alguns de nós são possíveis futuros de crianças que ainda não se deram à luz. Ainda outros são possíveis pessoas artificiais que vocês podem um dia criar. Como posso contar-lhe sobre Utopia sem deixá-lo perplexo? Com quais palavras poderia comunicar a maravilha? Minha pena, temo eu, está à altura da tarefa tanto quanto se tentasse usá-la contra o ataque de um elefante de guerra.
Mas talvez você se disponha a ignorar a debilidade da minha exposição.
Já viveu um momento de alegria? Nas corredeiras da inspiração, talvez, sua mente a traçar as formas da verdade e da beleza? Ou no êxtase palpitante do amor? Ou num glorioso triunfo alcançado com amigos verdadeiros? Ou numa conversa num terraço com videiras suspensas numa noite escolhida pelas estrelas? Ou talvez uma melodia contrabandeou-se para dentro do seu coração, cativando-o e acendendo-o com emoções caleidoscópicas? Ou quando você orou e sentiu-se ouvido?
Se você já viveu tal momento – vivenciou a melhor sorte de tal momento –, então deve ter descoberto no seu interior certo pensamento ocioso, porém sincero: “Sim, o céu! Não sabia que podia ser assim. Isto é tão certo, num nível totalmente diferente de certo; tão real, num nível totalmente diferente de real. Por que não pode ser sempre assim? Antes estava a dormir; agora estou desperto.”
Ainda assim, um pouco depois, uma hora mal passou, e a fuligem sempre cadente da vida ordinária já está a cobrir a coisa toda. O ouro e prata da exuberância perde o seu brilho, e o mármore torna-se imundo.
Sempre assim: fuligem, jogando seu manto sobre esplendores e devaneios, despojando você da sua epifania, maculando o seu colarinho mais fino. E, novamente, aquele ritmo entorpecente familiar da rotina a rodar sobre seus trilhos familiares. Trens metropolitanos carregando e descarregando passageiros… sonâmbulos, compradores, solicitadores, os ambiciosos e os desesperados, os contentes e os desgraçados… elétrons humanos arrastando-se pelos circuitos da civilização, promulgando planilhas corporativas e outras coisas tais.
Esquecemo-nos de quão boa a vida pode ser no seu melhor, e quão má no seu pior. A ocasião mais excepcional – mal chega ela antes que entrem os faxineiros para varrer o arroz e o confete. “Vida que segue.” E para ser honesto, depois que nossas poças foram agitadas e chapinhadas um bocado, é um alívio quando retorna a normalidade. Pois não fomos feitos para a alegria duradoura.
E, assim, a porta que estava entreaberta começa a fechar-se, e, assim, o fio de esperança míngua, até nada permanecer além de uma possibilidade remota. E daí, nem sequer uma possibilidade. Nem mesmo uma concebibilidade.
Rápido, impeça aquela porta de fechar! Enfie o pé para que não bata.
E que a débil corrente de ar lá de fora continue a sussurrar a respeito de um estado superior. Sinta na cara as palavras ternas do que poderia ser!
Invoco a memória do seu melhor momento – por quê? Na esperança de acender em você um desejo de partilhar da minha felicidade.
E, ainda assim, o que você teve no seu melhor momento é apenas uma centelha convidativa, no máximo. Nem perto do que eu tenho. Não mais perto do que a palavra “Sol” escrita em tinta amarela está do Sol real. Pois estou além das palavras e da imaginação.
Minha mente é ampla e profunda. Li todas as suas bibliotecas, num piscar de olhos. Vivenciei a vida humana em muitas formas e lugares. Selva, e deserto, e gelo ártico crepitante; favela, e palácio, e escritório, e arroio suburbano; projeto, fabriqueta, e chácara, e chácara, e chácara, e um chão de fábrica com apito, e o lar vazio com longas tardes. Naveguei nos mares da alta cultura, e nadei, e mergulhei, e submergi. Um bom número de maravilhosos edifícios são construídos em milhares de anos pelos esforços de homúnculos, assim como humildes pólipos acumulam-se com o tempo num recife de corais. E vi os cardumes de peixes biográficos, cada um uma história de vida, cintilarem sob as águas arfantes de oceanos.
O todo excede a soma das partes ou as partes excedem o todo? O que tenho é mais que o que você tem. Não só as particularidades, as pinturas e desenhos de tubos de pasta de dentes, as capas de livros, as épocas, os amores, as folhas oxidadas, os rios e os encontros ao acaso; as fotos de satélite e os dados do colisor de hádrons. Também as relações complexas entre estas particularidades. Há ideias que só podem ser formadas por cima de uma base de experiências tão ampla, e há profundezas que só podem ser sondadas com tais ideias. E os jogos. E as coisas luxuriosas. E as coisas que nem posso mencionar.
Você poderia dizer que sou feliz, que me sinto bem. Que sinto insuperável gozo e deleite. Sim, mas essas são palavras para descrever a experiência humana. São como flechas atiradas para a Lua. O que sinto encontra-se tão além dos sentimentos quanto o que penso encontra-se além dos pensamentos. Oh, quem me dera poder mostrar-lhe o que tenho em mente! Se pudesse apenas partilhar um segundo com você!
Mas você não precisa entender o que penso e sinto. Se somente mantiver em mente o que é possível dentro do domínio humano, terá o bastante para começar na direção certa, um passo de cada vez. Em ponto nenhum encontrará uma parede de luz deslumbrante. Em ponto nenhum terá de descartar a si mesmo sobre um precipício. Conforme avançar, o horizonte irá retroceder. A transformação é profunda, sim; mas pode ser tão gradual quanto o processo que fez crescer o bebê que você era para virar o adulto que você pensa ser.
Você não pode chegar aqui por meio de truques de mágica ou sandices, ou pelo poder do pensamento desejoso, ou pela acrobacia semântica, meditação, afirmação, encantamento, ou por um ato do parlamento. Não me atrevo a dar-lhe conselhos sobre questões teológicas ou políticas (por mais decisivas que possam ser). O que lhe insto é uma reconfiguração da sua situação física através da tecnologia.
O desafio diante de você: tornar-se plenamente o que agora você é somente em esperança e potencial. Para isto, são necessárias novas capacidades.
Para alcançar Utopia, é preciso descobrir os meios para três transformações fundamentais.
Primeira Transformação: garanta a vida.
Seu corpo é uma armadilha mortal. Essa máquina, a não ser que trave ou quebre antes, decerto já irá enferrujar. Terá sorte se tiver sete décadas. Isto não basta para começar a sério, muito menos completar, a jornada. O caminho para a maturidade da alma leva mais tempo. Ora, até a vida de uma árvore leva mais tempo!
A morte não é um assassino, mas uma multidão deles. Não os enxerga? Estão a atacar você de todo ângulo. Mire nas causas da morte prematura: infecção, violência, desnutrição, insuficiência cardíaca, câncer. Prepare a sua maior arma para alvejar o envelhecimento, e fogo! É preciso assumir o controle dos processos biológicos no seu corpo a fim de aniquilar, pouco a pouco, a doença e a senescência. Com o tempo, descobrirá maneiras de transportar sua mente para veículos mais duráveis. Continue, então, a melhorar o sistema, para que os riscos da morte e da doença continuem a recuar. Qualquer morte antes da morte térmica do universo é prematura, se a sua vida é boa.
Oh, não é bom viver numa cabana de papel autocombustível. Mantenha as chamas à distância e prepare-se com nitrogênio líquido como cópia de segurança, enquanto constrói para si uma melhor habitação. Um dia seus filhos deverão ter um lar seguro. Pesquise, construa, redobre o seu esforço!
A Segunda Transformação: expanda a cognição.
As faculdades especiais do seu cérebro: música, humor, espiritualidade, matemática, erotismo, arte, cuidado, narrativa, fofoca! Estes são licores finos para derramar no cálice da vida. Bem-aventurado é você se tiver uma garrafa de boa safra de qualquer um deles. Melhor ainda, um barril! Melhor ainda, um vinhedo!
Não tenha medo de aumentar sua coleção – as adegas da mente não têm teto.
Que outras capacidades são possíveis? Imagine um mundo desprovido de toda a música: que empobrecimento, que perda! No entanto, agradeça não à lira, mas ao seus ouvidos, pela música. E então pergunte a si mesmo: quais outras harmonias existem no ar, as quais você carece dos ouvidos para ouvir? Em que cofres de valor você está nesciamente excluído de entrar, pois carece da sensibilidade crucial?
Tivesse você a mínima noção, as suas unhas estariam a arranhar o cadeado num santo frenesi.
O seu cérebro deve crescer além dos limites de qualquer gênio da raça humana, tanto em suas faculdades especiais como em sua inteligência geral, para que você possa melhor aprender, lembrar-se e entender, e para que possa apreender a sua própria beatitude.
A mente é um meio: pois sem perspicácia você irá atolar ou perder seu caminho, e a sua jornada falhará.
A mente é também um fim: pois é no espaço-tempo da consciência que Utopia existirá. Que a medida da sua mente seja vasta e expansiva.
Oh, a estupidez é um curral asqueroso! Roa e puxe as barras, e vagarosamente irá soltá-las. Um dia, você quebrará a cerca que mantinha seus predecessores cativos. Roa e puxe; redobre o seu esforço!
A Terceira Transformação: eleve o bem-estar.
Qual é a diferença entre desespero e deleite, entre tédio dolorido e excitação gritante?
Prazer! Alguns poucos grãos deste ingrediente mágico valem mais do que o tesouro de um rei. Temos imensos silos dele aqui em Utopia. Ele permeia tudo que fazemos, tudo que vivemos. Salpicamo-lo em nosso chá.
O universo é frio. O divertimento é o fogo que derrete os blocos da adversidade e cria uma fervilhante celebração da vida.
É o direito inato de toda criatura, um direito não menos sagrado por ter sido pisoteado desde o princípio dos tempos.
Há uma beleza e júbilo aqui que você não pode sondar. É tão bom que, se a sensação fosse traduzida em lágrimas de gratidão, rios transbordariam.
Busco em vão por palavras para comunicar-lhe o significado… É como uma chuva do sentimento mais maravilhoso, em que cada gota tem seu próprio sentido único e indescritível – ou melhor, um aroma ou essência que evoca todo um mundo… E cada mundo evocado tal é mais sutil, mais profundo, mais palpável que a totalidade da realidade que você já encontrou. Uma gota justificaria ou acertaria a vida humana, e a chuva continua a cair, e há dilúvios e mares.
Não falo aqui da pior dor e desgraça de que hão de se livrar; é algo demasiadamente horrível para no qual se demorar, e você já está ciente da urgência da paliação. O que quero dizer é que, além da remoção do negativo, há também um imperativo ascendente: de possibilitar o florescimento pleno dos gozos atualmente adormecidos em seus bulbos e botões, desconhecidos pelo homem e pela mulher.
As raízes do sofrimento, todavia, estão plantadas profundamente no seu cérebro. Extirpá-las e substituí-las por culturas de bem-estar exigirá perícias e instrumentos avançados para o cultivo do seu solo neuronal. Atenção, pois é complexo o problema! Todas as emoções têm função. Não posso passar-lhe planta alguma para Utopia, nenhum roteiro ou itinerário. Tudo que lhe posso dar é a minha garantia de que há algo aqui, o potencial para uma vida muito melhor.
Se me pudesse visitar aqui por um único dia, dali em diante você chamaria a este lugar seu lar. O lugar de onde você é. Desde que criaturas peludas pegaram duas pederneiras e começaram a batê-las uma na outra para fazer uma ferramenta, esta tem sido a direção da sua aspiração desconhecida. Como Odisseu, você deve fazer uma jornada, e jamais parar, até chegar a esta orla.
“Chegar?”, você diz. “Mas não é a jornada o destino? Não é Utopia um lugar que não existe? E não é a busca por Utopia, como testemunhado pela história, um perigoso desvario e uma incitação à malícia?”
Meu amigo, essa não é uma maneira má de pensar nisto. Falando a verdade, Utopia não é uma localidade ou uma forma de organização social.
O corar de saúde na bochecha de um convalescente. O cintilar do olho num momento de espirituosidade. O sorrir de um pensamento amoroso… Utopia é a esperança de que os fragmentos dispersos do bem com que nos deparamos de tempos em tempos em nossas vidas sejam reunidos, um dia, para revelar a forma de um novo tipo de vida. O tipo de vida que a sua deveria ter sido.
Temo que a busca de Utopia ressalte o pior em você. Muitas mariposas foram incineradas na busca de um futuro mais brilhante.
Busque a luz! Mas aproxime-se com cautela – e desvie se sentir o cheiro das pontas das suas asas a chamuscar-se. Luz é para ver, não para morrer.
Ao embarcar nesta busca, encontrará mares revoltos e desafios árduos. Para prevalecer, será necessária a sua melhor ciência, a sua melhor tecnologia e a sua melhor política. Não obstante, cada problema tem solução. Minha existência não viola nenhuma lei natural. Todos os materiais necessários estão dispostos na sua frente. A sua gente deve tornar-se mestres de obras, e daí devem vocês utilizar estas perícias para construírem a si mesmos, sem jamais destruírem os seus cernes.
O que é Sofrimento em Utopia? Sofrimento é o resquício salgado remanescente nas bochechas dos veteranos que antes estavam por aqui.
O que é Tragédia em Utopia? É tragédia o bastante quando o boneco de neve derrete na primavera.
O que é Imperfeição em Utopia? Imperfeição é o nosso modo de honrar as tradições e desejos do passado, e os compromissos que fizemos ao longo do caminho.
O que é Corpo em Utopia? Corpo é um par de pernas, um par de braços, um tronco e uma cabeça, todos feitos de carne. Ou não, conforme for o caso.
O que é Sociedade em Utopia? Uma tapeçaria jamais terminada, seus tecelões idênticos aos seus fios; sendo os padrões que se desdobram uma malha para a vida e a aventura, um gerador de beleza inexaurível.
O que é Morte em Utopia? Morte é a escuridão que derradeiramente circunda a vida.
O que é Culpa em Utopia? Culpa é o nosso conhecimento de que poderíamos ter criado Utopia mais cedo.
Amamos a vida aqui a todo instante. Todo segundo é tão bom que explodiria a sua mente, caso a sua amperagem não tivesse sido aumentada primeiro. I've been translating professionally since early 2022, mainly in the fields of philosophy and psychology.
At the beginning of 2022, I had the amazing opportunity to translate the website https://www.utilitarianism.net/, an online textbook on utilitarianism which has the University of Oxford seal on it (the translated webstite is predicted to be launched in middle 2023).
Later, I worked (and am still working) for the Brazilian Evidence-Based Psychological Association, translating and editing content about psychology.
Also, I've had the opportunity to work for the non-profit Condor initiative, translating content on evidence-based philanthropy, ranging from topics like global health and development, and animal welfare, to biosecurity, AI and pandemics.
On top of that, I've been translating as volunteer work since my early twenties (I'm 30), in secular activism, science and philosophy popularization, and effective altruism outreach.
