Thanks Nov 23, 2012

Just like to say thank you to everyone who has contributed to this thread so far and in future - a couple of new ones for me and, hopefully, for you. In the interests of the furtherance of knowledge (smiles) it might also be an idea to consider what search strategies are most useful, but that will have to be another thread!

Thanks again

Steve K

Best wishes,

I also like the Free Dictionary for English synonyms as well as definitions, and sometimes for French translations:

I use Cambridge online for British English:
http://dictionary.cambridge.org/

Also, I recommend and use the GoldenDict program, an interface for searching in online and local dictionaries. It's somewhat like IntelliWebSearch, I believe, but it runs on Linux as well as Windows.

onelook, Answers.com, Urban Dictionary for everything American Nov 23, 2012

Depends on the field mostly, if it's technical, legal or medical, Onelook is usually the best, but for slang (I work in subtitling) it's Urban Dictionary for all the wierd things you wouldn't know except through some cutlural overdose!

Bab.la works fine for me! Nov 23, 2012

In addition to some of the above-mentioned resources (incl. Proz) and Kluwer Legal Lexicon I use Bab.la http://nl.bab.la/woordenboek/nederlands-engels/wegvallen for Dutch-English and English-Dutch. It also provides example sentences, quite handy.

Depends... Nov 23, 2012

... but I tend to start with Google if I really don't know the exact meaning a word - which, albeit rarely, happens. I mean, why plough through seven on-line dictionaries if Google usually shows the most accurate ones on the first page? I am aware that this suggestion is a) dependent on the language combination and b) probably frowned upon, but when looking for synonyms in translation, Google Translate and Bing Translate usually provide a good selection to choose from. When time is money, why go through all the bilingual directories?

Personally, I think Google Translate is rubbish and very, very unlikely to come up with accurate, specialised terminology. But you may have had different experiences of course...

Thanks for your input anyway..

To my mind, it's slower, less user friendly and doesn't seem to return the same number of results as it used to!
