Word count in a tagged document Apr 20, 2012

I was wondering if there is a way of counting the actual words in a tagged document, that is, NOT counting the words inside TAG...TAG* (which don't need to be translated). I am working on such a document right now and it's quite difficult to eye-ball the real word count. The document I have is in RTF format, if that is of importance.
