I wonder if it is a good idea to make the part more precise, where outsourcers should specify the nature of the files they want to have translated.
At least for more exotic languages the situation is often this: an agency gets a file or files from a customer: here is something in XXXXish, about marketing, could you please have it translated into YYYish?.
At the agency nobody understands a word of XXXish, so they do not even bother to open the files. They post the job stating perhaps:... See more I wonder if it is a good idea to make the part more precise, where outsourcers should specify the nature of the files they want to have translated.

At that point, if they were forced to specify this more, lets say by choosing from the following alternatives:
all editable text (doc, rtf,...)
mostly editable text (doc, rtf..) with some images to translate
pdf containing extractable text
pdf containing text in images
we translators could more easily guess, how much to charge for the job or if the amount offered is adequate or not. And the outsourcer would perhaps have a second thought about the whole project and the pricing.
Like to hear your opinion.

I have been following your thread, in Money Matters, with great interest.
About your suggestion, in the current job posting page there is already a fairly comprehensive list of the most common file formats (the field Source format), followed by a field where the outsourcer can enter some additional information (the field Source format notes). There is also a field where can be specified in what format the translation should be delivered.
I would think that this is sufficient to prompt the outsourcer to specify the essential details at the first approach, and perhaps complete the information later, when a translator is selected.
Probably asking an much larger number of questions, many of them irrelevant in most cases, would make the job posting extremely cumbersome. Just think of the number of possibilities and finer details... We have to strike a balance between listing all possibilities and practicality.
Another problem is that some outsourcers have no idea, or don't bother to enter even the most essential information, some don't even enter the field of their text, but that is another issue and no number of questions could solve it.

Dear Gianfranco, you are right about the possibility to select a wide range of file-formats. But this feature tells us only the extension of the files.
I have seen doc-files with lots of images which needed translation, and there is only one pdf-selection, but in many instances pdfs contain only images, no extractable text.

Technically it is possible to force job-posters to select one meaningful alternative about the complexity of the project. There are already many required fields in these forms, one more wouldn't spill the cup or break the horse's back.
But who knows?
