That's what I mean. This industry cannot support that many full time translators, just like you wouldn't see many full time presidents holding office in one country at any given time. From time to time we might see one or two of us being able to support ourselves by working full time as a translator, but these are exceptions, not the rule. The majority of us have to rely on something else for regular income, and translation is just moonlighting for us.

Li He,
I think this is where your analogy is a bit shaky. AFAIK, a good number of people right here in this forum have been doing translation full time for years, and are able to make a good living at it.

That's been my experience as well. I started out in a call center, was moved to interpreting, then to translation, after that I was lured away by another company with their piles of money and my own office to translate in. My entire department ended up getting laid off last September and that's when I starting working as a freelancer. It took about six months to develop a good client base and Proz helped me a lot in reaching more clients. I still have a lot of room to grow and improve, but I have food on the table and a roof over my head.

It's good to know that this industry can still support some full-time translators. Some years ago I tried to set up as a freelance translator, but I could never get enough work to fill my time. And some other accredited translators I know either have an unrelated full-time job or live in involuntary semi-retirement. So I often suspect that when a person says he/she is a full-time translator, this is just a cover up for his/her status as an unemployed person.

我是去年夏天成为正式会员的，经过一年多的努力，有了几个稳定的客户，现在也完全可以藉此谋生。这里藏龙卧虎什么样的高手都有，我倒是觉得自己的运气大于能力！呵呵。

自由翻译打市场应该也是需要时间的吧，不知道阁下现在在从事什么职业
就我个人的认知而言，翻译做到5年以后，转行是很难的，很多到30多岁之后都转为自由翻译
其实，翻译能转行还是蛮不错的，但是转行路径感觉很少

Li He 同事的说法有点道理：我们的行业很好进，任何一个人自以为懂一点英文就可以自称是翻译，搞得绝大多数所谓翻译实际上是闲人，这对专业译者也是很麻烦的一件事。
专业译者是存在的，但很可能不在中国市场上谋生，毕竟国内市场价格低，对译者的尊重严重匮乏。我虽然住在中国，尽量远离国内市场，专门找国外客户。
但是，只要你愿意认真工作，可以赚钱，可以活得舒舒服服的。

实际上，中国大陆生活水平低、劳动力便宜的状况，早已是老皇历了。我前不久回国，对国内最近几年物价飞涨的情况又有了更深的体会。短短几年之内，房价翻了至少一番。北京三环路旁一套约80平米的旧公寓房，价格就在320万元人民币左右，约相当于50万美元。如果租用的话，每月房租则在5000元以上。许多日常生活必需品的价格折成美元后，也已经接近甚至高于美国的物价。舶来品、奢侈品的价格更是高得出奇。医疗费、子女教育费，也占家庭开支的很大比重。娱乐、旅游的花费也是不菲。所以让人难以理解的是，在生活费用如此高涨的今天，居然还有不少人肯接受很低的翻译价格。也许其中不少人搞翻译只是作为一种副业，捞些外快而已，并不赖以为生。在国内以做翻译为唯一收入来源的人，如果住房问题早已解决，也许还可以过得不错。否则的话，要想“活得舒舒服服”，则实属不易。

You're kidding! Approximately 860 square feet that cost about $500k, for an ownership that has an expiration date. That has to be the worst deal imaginable ... not to mention having to put up with all the crowdedness, traffic problems, air pollution, etc. ... definitely not good. No, siree!

不只是翻译找好的客户难，客户找好的翻译更难。
我太太工作的地方需要翻译一份文件，满满的4页A4纸。由于我是她的丈夫，所以她不能给我做，于是交给中国的机构去做。中国那边的报价是300人民币。我太太很吃惊，于是加了一倍价格请中国那边去翻译。
能够接受300元价格翻译4页纸文件的人，我能想像其提供的翻译质量一定是低劣不堪。但是你不能指望不经常使用翻译服务的客户能够花费很大精力去调查研究，然后从众多低质量的翻译中挑选出一个好的来。及时客户愿意加价，向我太太那样，也不能保证那个翻译提供的东西能令人满意。

你认识很多30多岁的自由翻译？成功么？不是我提到的那种自称为自由翻译的失业人员吧？
其实我想说，因为不好转行，所以才不得不做自由翻译的；
28~30岁开始转行，一切从头开始，待遇必然很低，而且其他行业还不一定愿意要30多岁的，大多数会认为刚毕业的学生更有活力和干劲，更能吃苦，30多岁不好使唤。
另外一个原因，笔译做久了与人沟通的能力似乎在漫漫退化，习惯了各自为战的工作模式，因此会很难融入群体，也导致转行不易。
自由翻译要想获得国内社会认同的成功（金钱收入高+复杂的社会关系网），基本是不可能的，当然，高级同传口译可能除外。
