1808 There's a fascinating book about him, titled "1808." I read it in Portuguese; it's now available in English. As I noted in my response to Nick's answer, he was King Pedro IV of Portugal *until* he fled from Napoleon and declared himself the first Emperor of Brazil, making the best of an otherwise bad situation.

How do you know it is Pedro I of Brazil, and not Pedro I, King of Portugal? I was "betting" on D. Pedro I of Portugal.

I think you can say "King" in order to make it understood to people who may not know that. He was also Pedro IV of Portugal.
