...would be my first guess, in the absence of proper context: the Nazi airmen where shifting these packing cases full of precious artworks without taking any care whatsoever.

That's the whole point: the writer used 'résonner', definitely suggesting it was violent enough to make a noise; remember, the cases are hollow, not entirely filled. But of course they weren't banging on them
