I use a Microsoft wireless keyboard, and I have just realised that it has no F-keys.
Dozen of other keys I have no use for - but no F9 key, which I need to update tables of content in Word documents.

Any of you have a shortcut to how this can be done?

Your help is much appreciated! Thanks!

Dinny

Your keyboard has all Fx keys Dec 20, 2012

I don't think that there has ever been any Microsoft keyboard without Fx keys.

See this: http://the-gadgeteer.com/2009/06/17/microsoft-wireless-desktop-3000-review/

Or read the manual for your keyboard model.

Alt + Shift + U Dec 20, 2012

When you right click the Word Menu to get to the toolbar adjustment menu, you'll see the keyboard shortcuts button at the bottom.
Click that, in the left list scroll down to "all commands".
click anywhere on the righthand list and scroll down to the "updatefields" command.
When you click on that, you'll see the shortcuts assigned to that command: F9 and Alt + Shift + U
Now you can just use the alt + shift command or remap the command to use any key that you like.

Caveat: I have the Polish version of Word 2007, so the names above may differ somewhat.

Thanks, Pawel! Dec 20, 2012

That is very reassuring to know that there is another way around the F-keys.
I will go and try it out right away.

Thank you so much for your help!

Nice link, Rolf Dec 20, 2012

Thanks, I am having a closer look at that.
I actually never got into what my new wireless keyboard could do, as long as it provided what I normally needed. I was just happy to get rid of the wires!
If I ever get time, I will try to find the new wonders of this keyboard - it might contain pleasant surprises!
