Dear colleagues,

I have translated a word document (which has been an OCR, converted from a scanned PDF) with the Tageditor SDL Trados 2006 Freelance. Before beginning the translation, I have checked the document and have deleted the caracters/symbols which did not correspond to the source text. I have saved it with a new name.

I had no problems during the translation. But when I try to save the document with only the target text, I get this error message: "error while writing document" or "cannot open, as document is in Word 97 or earlier format". It is the same with the cleanup: "error while writing document".
I have checked the tags and they have not been modified. I have done a reorganisation, but without success. I have saved again the source file under a new name - no success.

What can I do to get the Word version of the target text?
Thank you very much for your help!

Kind regards,
Anja

First, try to save the untranslated TTX back to Word May 25, 2010

If you get an error, there's some problem with the original document. If not, there's some error in your translation (probably some missing or extra or incorrect tag).

If the problem is in the original document, you can send it to me (yossi at rozenman.com) and I'll try to locate it.

the same in SDL Studio May 26, 2010

Hi!

I have the same problem in SDL Studio with large documents. Originals are in .docx format. I tried to save the source text only and it was ok.

PS: I wander if "merge segments" can be the reason?

If the untouched source does save properly, the reason is always on your side May 26, 2010

So before we go further here in searching for various reasons, lets check the most obvious things first.
If the target cannot be written, check tags in your translation, most probably there will be a tag omitted somwhere.
Double clicking the error messages reported brings you to the affected location in your document. Correct the errors and try again.

As for the merging - as long you do not delete necessary tags this cannot be a reason for any problems.

tags checked, untranslated ttx cannot be saved in Word May 26, 2010

Dear Jerzy,

I have checked the tags several times, and they are ok. Furthermore, I have tried to save the untranslated TTX back to Word as Yossi told me (in tag editor: save target), but I get the same tag editor error message "error while writing document".

Could you please check the untouched source? May 26, 2010

Open the source document in TE again, save as bilingual TTX, then attempt to save as doc - if that works, the problem is still the translation (what I do not suppose now), otherwise the problem results already from the source.

So the problem is source... May 26, 2010

I have already postet this dozens of times: before you start translating do exactly that check. It would save you a lot of work.

Now you will need to examine the Word doc for potential problems.
First simply try to save it as W2007 and retry TagEditor test. If this does not work, try with OpenOffice. If that does not help, save as rtf. Close document and Word, open the rtf, save as doc...
And so on - there is no really a patented solution for that, always the same: searc

Convert RTF sometimes solves that (well, It always worked for me) May 26, 2010

Hello,

I found a similar problem a few times (with Trados 2007) and did not manage to find "a" solution.

But this worked (always):

- Saved the source file as RTF.

- Translated it using the translation memory and Workbench. (Note that this not worked on the doc/docx, the same way the cleaning did not work, but it worked on the RTF).

- Cleaned it!!

- Opened the clean RTF in Word and saved again as Doc or Docx.

This only worked like this. It did not work using Tageditor and "saving as..."

This will not work on some word files, but if there's nothing "exotic" in them, it may work.

Hope it helps!!!

Problem solved: Corrupt tables in source document May 26, 2010

Yossi has solved the problem! There were corrupt tables in the source file which could only be fixed in Word97. I would like to thank you Yossi and all the others who tried to find a solution! Thank you very much!!!
