Outsourcingowa chemia medyczna
Od niedawna podobną tendencję można zauważyć także w zakresie chemii medycznej – firmy farmaceutyczne wykorzystują źródła zewnętrzne do poszukiwaniu nowych substancji leczniczych. Skąd wziął się wzrost popularności outsourcingu, czyli wykorzystania zewnętrznych firm (CRO – contract research organization) w tej gałęzi przemysłu? Do lat 90. XX wieku strategia outsourcingu była wykorzystywana przez firmy farmaceutyczne głównie w celu końcowego określenia profilu potencjalnego leku w późnej fazie przedklinicznej. Obecnie przedsiębiorstwom zewnętrznym można zlecić cały proces projektowania leków od A do Z, choć najczęściej zakontraktowane prace obejmują rutynowe i czasochłonne procesy, m.in. skalowanie syntezy czy syntezę półproduktów. Dzięki takim rozwiązaniom odciążeni zostają „rdzenni” chemicy, którzy swój czas mają poświęcić na tworzenie nowych molekuł i optymalizację cząsteczki.
