false front

Where the idiom was first constructed : -) Considering that a great many immigrants in the new U.S. American West came from Germany and Austria following WWI, it's no wonder the custom was continued, albeit less ornately - they only had wood to work with.

Put up a good front :-)
agree Z-Translations Translator : "Often used on two-story buildings, the style includes a vertical facade with a square top, often hiding a gable roof. The goal for the architecture is to project an image of stability" https://www.hisour.com/western-false-front-architecture-2982...

The Architecture and Planning Committee has welcomed proposals for the demolition of the existing 1960’s bus station and the redevelopment of the shopping area. The poor condition of the existing buildings had detracted from the character of the city centre for far too long. In essence, the Trust is in agreement with the scheme, particularly the requirement to use Bath stone ashlar. However, the Trust is concerned about the use of Bath stone veneers as proposed by developers and associated construction techniques. Whilst the mock façade constructed looks effective, we are concerned about the durability of the veneers. We have been writing to the developers, Multi, on this matter and however so far we have not received sufficient reassurances from them. We will be continuing to seek clarification and will remain vigilant over the construction of the scheme and elements of the scheme yet to be agreed such as shop signage and landscaping works, especially the works to the Station forecourt. We will encourage the retention of historic materials and use of pennant stone paving throughout the scheme.

No more faking – Planning News
The Category A-listed # Hotel at 15–25 # Street has applied for permission to change its exterior at No. 21 (Ref. #).
On the south-facing elevation, it proposes replacing the 1980s ground-level mock facade with a new shop front for a coffee and wine bar. The shop front would not exactly restore its 19th-century original predecessor, but looks smart and sympathetic enough to us.

apparent façade

Selbstironisch hinterfragt wird dieser Kunstgriff an der nördlichen Begrenzung dieser "Scheinfassade": Sie läuft hier in einem spitzen Sporn aus.
The irony of this trick is at the north of this "apparent façade": It simply ends here in a pointed spur.

Abstract
The purpose of this communication is to make a contribution to knowledge about the technical quality assessment of the apparent facade cladding made with slabs of natural stone.
https://www.researchgate.net/publication/49241818_Proposal_f...

The patterns observed in the diagrams shows the apparent façade insulation to be strongly dependent on the source angle and, for the closed window case, that the response is symmetric with insulation minima generally observed at normal incidence.

The structure seems strangely flimsy, mainly as a result of its multilateral columns that seem to bow and compress with the force applied by the floor plate above. Of course, the visual impact is achievable by the fact that there is no apparent facade.

Peer comment(s):

disagree Lancashireman : Misleading set of references: 1) The irony of this trick is at the north of this "apparent façade" – clue is in the word irony; 2) “no apparent façade” = no façade apparent; 3) “apparent façade cladding/insulation” refers to the cladding/insulation.

parapet façade

The photos below show what a Scheinfassade is, i.e. the topmost part of a building frontage that conceals the roof and makes the building look more imposing.

As you can see, the photo on the right looks like what we see in Western towns in the movies.

This is called a parapet façade.

"What is a PARAPET FACADE?
By definition, parapet walls are vertical walls above the roofline. They are usually meant to protect humans from falling over.
But others offer some kind of facade that a building is taller. The PARAPET FACADE usually hides the roof to make the house look bigger."

"I am very new at Archicad and still learning the language.
Where can I find info on how to create a simple PARAPET FACADE on the front of a single storey unit?"

"When flat roofs are used, parapet walls with three-dimensional cornice treatments shall conceal them. The cornice shall include a perpendicular projection a minimum of eight inches from the PARAPET FAÇADE plane."

"A PARAPET FAÇADE, a brick and slate roof parapet fails to hide the true corrugated iron roof that really covers the building." ¨Photo here: https://www.alamy.com/a-parapet-faade-a-brick-and-slate-roof...

"There is a gable roof behind the PARAPET FAÇADE wall." Photo: Figure 7 here - https://www.mdpi.com/2076-0752/11/3/58/htm#fig_body_display_...

"Corner Store still maintains the traditional boomtown PARAPET FAÇADE which was common in rural areas in the early 20th century." Photo here: https://www.historicplaces.ca/en/rep-reg/place-lieu.aspx?id=...

Scheinfassade vs. Blendfassade
