French term

tape d'obturation des taraudages de cuve

French to English Tech/Engineering Nuclear Eng/Sci reactor internals
This appears in a list of operations required to open the vessel in order to perform maintenance operations:

Opérations d’ouverture cuve:
Pose MSDG, dévissage des goujons et retrait MSDG,
Pose des colonnes de guidage du couvercle et des **tapes d’obturation des taraudages de cuve**,
Levage du couvercle et pose sur stand.

Can anyone think of a succinct way of saying this? I've currently got "vessel thread closure plates", but I'm not convinced...

Many thanks

Hi Radu,

Thanks for your suggestion; the cuve is definitely a reactor vessel in this context though - of that I am sure! I've come across tape d'obturation in steam generators as nozzle dams (as per AFNOR), but here they're used to seal the taraudages and I therefore wondered whether a different term would apply.

vessel stud-hole blanking plate

Since the MSDG is a Machine de Serrage/Déserrage des Goujons, it makes sense that these "taraudages" are in fact the threaded holes receiving the studs.

Definitely "vessel stud hole", I'd say, but the "tape" could well be a "plug", esp. if inflatable as in this patent :

Shortly after the start of the 1987 refueling outage in April, a significant increase in personnel skin contaminations occurred. On April 9, high surface contamination (up to 300,000 dpm/100 cm 2) and high airborne activity levels (2E-7 æCi/cc, mixed fission products) in containment resulted from the dispersal of fuel fragments during reactor vessel stud removal and STUD-HOLE PLUGGING operations.

And after all that, I see that although the AFNOR dict. does not have "stud hole plug", it DOES have "studhole (one word) plug handling tool" (outil de pose et dépose des bouchons de taraudage") (but "stud hole (two words) cleaning machine" – "machine de nettoyage des trous de goujons").

"Nozzle dam" is the only translation given by the Dictionnaire Framatome for "tape d'obturation".
I would trust it, especially since the "cuve" seems to be - in your case too - destined to steam generation, as a result of the transformation of nuclear energy and its usage to generate thermal energy.

In my opinion, "obturer des taraudages" has no other meaning but filling some threaded holes of the tank.

Maybe my solution might be slightly optimized:
"nozzle dams for internal tank threads".

English translation:temporary ground - blind flanges
Explanation:
I wonder how electrical your context really is!

The AFNOR nuclear dictionary gives "terre volante" as "temporary ground", but you'll find "tape pleine: blind flange, blanking plate, closure plate", "tape d'obturation: nozzle dam", "tape: cover, plug". No entry under "joint plein" but my guess is it is pretty much the same thing.
