The inspectors are responsible for seeing that the glass they approve meets the following requirements:
It must be clear.
It must not contain large air bubbles, holes, kiln stones or other glass defects.
During glass mass melting, a chemical reaction causes gases to form which may leave tiny air bubbles into the glass mass.
During glass blowing bubbles may appear on the product. Some bubbles disappear, some stay visible. Bubbles inside the glass do not affect the durability of the glass.
The inspectors have guidelines for each product as to what type of bubbles are acceptable and what are not. E.g. no visible bubbles are allowed in bowl or top part of a wine glass, but tiny bubbles are allowed in the bottom of the bowl or foot, if they are not disturbing. In vases a bubble of >2mm is not acceptable on the top of the vase, but is acceptable on the bottom of the vase where it is not as visible.
