English term

some scholars doubted it ever existed

English to Arabic Social Sciences Linguistics tense formulation in a sentence
"But archaeological digs throughout the city had failed to discover such a pool and some scholars doubted it ever existed."

I just can't formulate the tense in this sentence!!

Discussion

lhcm Feb 8, 2010:
ever=كان / في الماضي شك بعض العلماء في وجوده في الماضي
أو
شك بعض العلماء هل هو كان موجودا (في الماضي)؟
Mona Helal (asker) Feb 4, 2010:
The problem Ibrahim, wasn't how the source sentence was written (Some people fail to add 'that' and 'whether' and they get away with it). The problem was formulating the sentence in Arabic to convey the intended meaning. I think Nadia is on the right track. Thank you all :))
Ibrahim I. Ibrahim (X) Feb 4, 2010:
Would it help if the original sentence had been written as follows: "...and some scholars doubted that/whether it ever existed"?
Mona Helal (asker) Feb 4, 2010:
ever existed
Fuad Yahya Feb 4, 2010:
Which tense? The tense of "doubted" or "ever existed"?

Many thanks Ahmed :)
agree baligh : Nice suggestion, also depending on how you're going to translate "pool", I would say وجودها because "pool" might translate as a feminine noun in Arabic.

Thank you and you're right, it should be وجودها as pool is probably بركة
agree Tarik Boussetta : It can be حوض too:)

Thanks Tarik, you're right حوض is fine too :)
