Discussion

Charles Ek Mar 1, 2010:
I looked long and hard first for use of any technical terms incorporating "substitute" or "substitution", as appears in the glossary, but to no avail. "Roof sheathing" was the only specific term that I could find that matches the Danish construction diagram that I referenced.
Christine Andersen Mar 1, 2010:
This term is already in the glossary At

roof sheathing(s)

See http://www.rockwool.dk/råd og vejledning/brandguiden/generel...
for a drawing of a "brandkamerstatning". See the reference link below for this:

"Today, a major use of FRT plywood is as roof sheathing in multifamily dwellings at party-separation walls. In dwellings such as townhouses and condomini- ums, some building codes allow the use of 4 ft (12.2 m) of FRT plywood as roof sheathing at the party-separation wall in lieu of a fire-rated parapet extending above the roof line."

A firewall is a vertical partition. But a "brandkamerstatning" is a substitute for a parapet ("brandkam") that is installed horizontally, to prevent fire from spreading along the underside of a roof.

There's a typo in the original example -- it should be "1.2 m", not "12.2 m" -- that I should have noticed when copying and pasting from its source.

Here is a working link to the Danish firm's drawing of a "brandkamersatning":
