This is part of a description of tanks used for storing diesel and heating oil. It is a device used for detecting leaks. Any ideas?

sounding tube
That would be an almost literal translation, or something like the "signaling pipe". However, that term is never used in English, whereas "sounding tube" is a very common expression. These can be simple tubes like transparent sight glasses mounted outside on the side of the tank, or sophisticated electronic devices. They are used to determine the level of fluid in a tank, and are often wired to alarm devices to give a warning when the fluid level drops below a predetermined point.
