the the terms of an arhitectural project descripion... the architetcts have 'opholdssteder' and 'opholdsmuligheder'...
In relation to the project (redevelopment of Aarhus harbour) the first could be shelter or construction or building, but the second is one of those typical generic Danish composite words which can be so difficult to translate... any offers?

I would call them "open spaces," as that is the term most often used now for public spaces, or multi-purpose common areas. Though you could use "multi-purpose common areas."

green areas
"Opholdsmuligheder" is a very vague term, but from the plans I have seen on the spot, green areas might cover it. These would be points where shoppers and office workers could sit and eat a sandwich, weather permitting. The view is quite interesting if one can shelter from the elements and get away from lorry fumes. There are going to be some quite high blocks - residential?? offices?? overlooking the harbour. Ferry passengers and freight
traffic pass through, and I think the 'opholdsmuligheder' would refer to oases where one could get away from the worst bustle for a breather.
They would need to be sheltered one way or another - there is always a wind, and for a lot of the year it is absolutely freezing... I used to wait for buses across the way when I commuted to Århus :-D

You could perhaps call the opholdssteder waiting facilities and the opholdsmuligheder green areas if you wanted to.

| Thanks Christine... as with last time you come through shining! Thing is, what are they called in English?... I have used the expression recreational areas, which seems to be the generic term we are using for this translation. I know the area too and and can see the space in my minds eye while translating.. as well as referring to the plans which don't seem to reference any form of structure at all other than the new Multimedia space. I know what you mean about green areas, but I tink they are more likely to be multi-purpose areas with seating, shelters, perfrmance spaces etc... so I think we'll leave it open and just call it recreational areas for the time being until we get a team concensus. But thanks for your input. |

In the olden days (like my kinda olden days), that used to be the next to the church, meaning a communual meeting place open for anyone/everyone in the local community and beyone. I don't know if this of any help?

Here I think what is meant are replacements for the 'pølsevogn' (sorry, café Perlen, I think it is called) or snack bar, and places with more or less shelter from the elements, where one can sit and enjoy the view, or wait for friends or transport. Possibly a waiting room for bus passengers that is slightly larger than the ordinary bus shelters, although there are regular bus stops just across the road.
