German term

stossartig

German to English Tech/Engineering Construction / Civil Engineering Glass in construction
Paper about robustness and damage tolerance in the concept and design of glass load-bearing structural elements:

I have translated this as "abruptly" but I am thinking that something linked more closely to "impact" = "Stoss" which is an important aspect in this paper may be appropriate.

Discussion

Johannes Gleim Mar 5, 2016:
impact test From my previous activities as appliance tester and factory inspector I know "impact tests". For example, we tested the resistance to impact of housings (glazing included) with steel balls thrown from a hight of 3 feet. I also observed testing of laminated sheet glass with a 5-m-pendulum charged with a sandbag and swung from a horizontal distance of approximately 5 m and 5 m high.
Elizabeth Niklewska (asker) Mar 5, 2016:
Yes, that's right
Johannes Gleim Mar 5, 2016:
Elizabeth Niklewska (asker) Mar 4, 2016:
Associated term in the text "schlagartig" In other parts of the text "schlagartig" is also used

In this known aligning the action of the push rod to the lateral edge of the glazing is done impulsively. The danger that the softened glass sheet is deformed at this point by this shock-like touch, so is also available with this known device.
The invention is based on the object, an alignment of the type mentioned in such a way that an impulsive touching the glass edges is avoided by the push rods and the movement of the push rods is developing according to any desired time-distance function, at the same time robust and practical design of the device.

3 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Your suggestion was very helpful - I have changed it in light of the occurrence of the term "axialstoßartig" more clearly suggesting that "impact" is being referred to"

impulsively

This might offer both connotations of ‘suddenly’ and ‘with impact’
Peer comment(s):

neutral philgoddard : No, this is about numbers.//Numbers, ie dimensions, can't have impulses :-)

Don't understand. This is an adverb: How do they increase: impulsively, abruptly. Abruptly would fit well too, but does not connotate the idea of 'impact' which is implicit in "STOSS(artig)"

abruptly

I think it's just a synonym for "plötzlich".

The connection with the idea of impact is a coincidence in my opinion. An impact is something that happens suddenly.
Example sentence:

jerkily, intermittently

Stossartig, wie ein stoss. In English like jolting, jerking, bumping. So "Jerkingly" or "intermittently" must be almost the same as "Stossartig"

Correction, Intermittently is wrong.

I'd call it
