German term

überfest

German to English Tech/Engineering Construction / Civil Engineering
Paper about robustness and damage tolerance in the design and dimensioning of glass load-bearing structural elements

Usually the prefix "über" denotes excessive, I am thinking "highly sturdy design" would make sense here.

Johanna Timm, PhD Mar 4, 2016:
überfest=dauerfest? (fatigue-resistant)? See the added note in my answer
Elizabeth Niklewska (asker) Mar 4, 2016:
Technical term As indicated by the description this is a technical text
CAK Mar 3, 2016:
I agree. This sounds more like a technical term to me.
Cilian O'Tuama Mar 1, 2016:
From the tone of the source text, it seems to me we need a technical term here rather than a marketing one. Or what kind of 'paper' is this?

overdesigned

Also "overengineered". These terms refer to the practice of applying higher safety factors than required to a structure, or really any design. It is mildly pejorative, as it implies a design that is less than elegant and is more costly than necessary. Here, however, it is used deliberately to indicate that these structural elements must be designed to withstand even explicitly unusual circumstances.

I would suggest "overdesign and excess protection of" for "überfeste Ausbildung und Schutz von".

overstrong

Not my field, therefore low CL!
Trying to find a definition for "überfest", I came across this description:

http://www.holzbauforschung.at/fileadmin/products_online/bsp...

Could not locate any convincing references for „non-dissipative“, but, surprisingly, for “overstrength, overstrong”:

“overstrong” in the context of structural stability
If the beam section is designed to resist the maximum bending moment…the section will be overstrong for all other locations.

In a different context, I came across the term"dauerfest" and am now wondering if "überfest" is just another, less used term for "dauerfest" (fatigue-resistant)
