Portuguese term

Benjamins

Portuguese to English Other Sports / Fitness / Recreation
Benjamins e Infantis - 1 km -
Iniciados e Juvenis - 2 km -
Juniores, Seniores e Veteranos - 3 km -

It is obviously an age group but I can't find any reliable source in English

Yup, I thought so, Tom. That's why I didn't post it. Perhaps preteen or pre-teen?
[Edited] Oops, I actually had posted it. Already hidden.
Tom Jamieson Dec 12, 2015:
@Mario Pee wee isn't use in British English, no. We hear it plenty in American films and pop culture, but it's not used in Britain.
Tom Jamieson Dec 12, 2015:
Honestly I have never heard this term in my life. From some extensive googling (and judging by the array of answers on here) it seems that it gets applied to different age groups depending on the organisation.

If it was me, I would contact the client and ask them to specify the age group for "Benjamins e Infantis". I certainly wouldn't write "under 8s", "under 11s", or any specific age range, without knowing if it's actually correct.
Nick Taylor Dec 9, 2015:
Whoops! What am I talking about! THERE IS NO APOSTROPHE!!! It just looks so weird with the lower case "s"
Ana Vozone Dec 9, 2015:
@Mário Já está... mais vale tarde do que nunca ;)
Mario Freitas Dec 9, 2015:
@ Ana but Doug needs a term in English...
Ana Vozone Dec 9, 2015:
@Douglas My apologies, I think I provided the wrong link for my reference.

http://www.fpatletismo.pt/Cache/REGULAMENTO_GERAL_DE_COMPETI...

Please have a look at Artigo 9.º, page 7. It applies to both boys and girls.

The "Regulamento Geral de Competições" of the FPA gives the following age groups:

Benjamins A 7 a 9 anos
Benjamins B 10 e 11 anos
Infantis 12 e 13 anos
Iniciados 14 e 15 anos
Juvenis 16 e 17 anos 16 e 17 anos
Juniores 18 e 19 anos 18 e 19 anos
Seniores 20 anos em diante

If your text is about a race in Portugal, why don't you consider this "official" classification?

Rafael Sousa Brazlate Dec 9, 2015:
@Douglas, Have you seen this!? They call them Atoms. Do not know if applies for the sport you are translating.

Mario Freitas Dec 9, 2015:
Don't they use "Pee Wee" in England? It's pretty common in the US.
Douglas Bissell (asker) Dec 9, 2015:
@Margarida and Ana,
This is my problem; there seems to be no 'one-age-fits-all" definition.

What about 'kids and children'? it means just as much (little) as the original...
Tem razão (em parte) os benjamins é a partir dos 9 anos, pelo menos no futebol, ver: http://www.cri.pt/?page_id=207
Rafael Sousa Brazlate Dec 9, 2015:

under-(specific age)

Take a look at this google search. I would try to figure out the age of these Benjamins and use the under-(specific age) format.
https://www.google.com.br/search?q="benjamins e infantis"&ie...

For instance, the link below calls benjamins the under-10 and under-11 teams.

The text lumps together 'benjaminos' and 'infantis' so this would be 7 to 13 year olds.
