When I started freelancing almost ten years ago, I used a variety of methods to reach out to potential clients. I placed an ad in the local yellow pages (no lead whatsoever), I sent out hundreds of emails to translation agencies (this landed me a couple of jobs), but by far the most efficient way of promotion was using the features that are available on ProZ.com.
My impression and experience with ProZ.com is positive. I get the majority of my clients from there. I use the services, like the Blue Board and the webinars, I watch the International Translation Day each year. I've spoken to someone from ProZ.com regarding my rates and she was very helpful. I'd say the yearly fee is totally worth it. I think ProZ.com is definitely on the side of freelancers, I think it's a great platform and I'm so glad I found it.
One of the greatest things of being a ProZ.com member is being able to see the Blue Board. It's very, very helpful to see what other translators have to say.

I've been a member since 2005, Plus member since it started. As it's my only marketing channel I'm quite positive about it. I attended a ProZ.com conference in Eiffel Tower in 2010 and met Henry and other ProZ.com people there. I'll use ProZ.com services for as long as I translate. For me, the most useful function is the Blue Board. All of my clients have come via ProZ.com, both agencies and direct clients, even if not directly via ProZ.com but as recommended by my clients.

This past year has been great. I woke up one morning deciding to go back to translating full time but I was not 100% sure that my decision was the right one. J’apprécie également la possibilité de pouvoir obtenir des informations sur les agences de traduction et les donneurs d’ordre en général grâce au Blue Board (certes non exhaustif, mais ô combien utile !), et de l’aide en cas de besoin avec les KudoZ.
