Source text - Chinese
Translation - English My interest in mechanics and the engineering industry is something very close to my heart, as a result of my family opening one of the first electric tool shops in my hometown. Moreover, I have experienced firsthand thousands of people coming to my hometown, in order to get work in one of the many hardware and tool factories. Additionally, the rapid expansion of China and it’s growing engineering industry has influenced my choice in applying for a place on the MSc Mechanical Engineering Design course at your distinguished institution.
As previously mentioned my interest in this field of study stems from my family's involvement in the industry. From a young age I have been around machines and have had to learn how they work. This is what sparked my initial interest and what prompted me to go on and study Mechanical Design, Manufacturing and Automation at an undergraduate level. Through four years of studying I have developed a deeper understanding of the theory behind the things I learnt in my family’s shop. Even though I feel that I have furthered my mechanical and engineering knowledge at university, I feel that there are benefits to gaining experience in the workplace.
Through work placements, internships and competitions, I have acquired key skills that I think are advantageous to somebody applying for a place on your course. During an internship for Volkswagen, I managed to earn an International Registered Mechanical Engineer qualification. To earn this qualification I was a department manager of a design department at Volkswagen Shanghai. The responsibilities of this role included managing a team of people to ensure we created products that were at the forefront of the company and industry. Additionally, I have interned for Huahong Optical Technology as a metal workshop operator assistant. The responsibilities of this role differed from that of my role at Volkswagen. At Huahong I was in charge of designing CNC programs with technical workers, doing experimental comparisons, selecting the most economical and efficient program codes, and transforming semi-finished products into products. Through both of these opportunities I managed to learn what it is like to work in the industry. By way of needing to be part of a team I gained good communication skills, as I often needed to interact with a large group of people. Finally, I also competed in the University Students Innovation Competition in China, where I was inspired by a motorbike accident to make an automatic kickstand. Through this competition I worked with an instructor who helped to expand my professional knowledge greatly by introducing me to concepts and programs I had no experience of before.
Within my undergraduate degree I completed a number of units and modules that I think have given a good foundation on which to build on. Firstly, through undertaking a unit on Advanced Mathematics I have the ability to analyze, generate, simulate, associate and construct mathematical models. I believe all of these skills are indispensable in the workplace. Secondly, the Mechanical Design module helped lay the base of my theoretical knowledge in various areas of mechanics. Lastly, I have learnt about the relationship between electrical control and mechanics by completing a unit about Electromechanical Transmission Control. I enjoyed learning about these units and am eager to delve deeper into the theory behind all of them.
Despite my experience and academic achievements, my hunger to learn more is the main reason why I am applying for a place on your course. My long term goal is to become a respected mechanical engineer and be in a position where I am able to help advance China’s manufacturing industry. Furthermore, I know that my aspirations will allow me to overcome any challenge or obstacle that I may encounter whilst studying this degree.

Languages have always been a part of my life, due to growing up abroad. Living in places, such as Kuwait, Vietnam and China, opened my eyes to other cultures and showed me different ways of living. Additionally, whilst living in these places, I learnt the languages of these countries at school and relished the opportunity to utilise them in my daily life. When it came time to attend university, I decided to continue studying Mandarin, whilst starting to study Spanish from scratch. Currently completing an MA in Translation Studies at the University of Portsmouth, I also have experience of translating and proofreading university applications for Chinese students wanting to study in the U.K. Additionally, I have translated contracts and holiday brochures, as part of my masters degree.
