1945（昭和20）年８月１５日、日本は終戦を迎え、「忠君愛国」を国民道徳とする教育内容は、個人を尊重する教育へと代わり、子供の本の世界も一転します。翌年３月には、児童文学者協会が創立し、７月には、初山滋、武井武雄らが中心となって日本童画会が結成されて、子供の本の関係者の活動が本格的に始まります。
民主主義の国をめざし、子どもに未来への夢と希望を届けようとする時代の気運の中、戦後の早い時期から「子供の広場」「赤とんぼ」等の児童雑誌が次々と創刊され、数多くの小出版社も生まれ、絵本も出版されました。
この時代、著しい物資不足の中で、また、GHQの検閲下、統制も厳しいものがありましたが、「二度と戦争を繰り返さず、平和な国を建設する」、その担い手となる子どもを育てようと、作家、画家、編集者は熱い想いにあふれていました。

Con la rendición de Japón en la Segunda Guerra Mundial el 15 de agosto de 1945, el sistema educativo japonés, que se había inspirado en valores como el patriotismo y la lealtad al Emperador, pasa a adquirir un carácter más individualista. En ese contexto, el mundo de la literatura infantil japonesa da un vuelco. En marzo del año siguiente, se funda la Jidou Bungakusha Kyoukai ("Sociedad de Escritores de Literatura Infantil") y, en julio, se forma la Nihon Doga Kai ("Asociación de Ilustradores Infantiles") en torno a figuras como Shigeru Hatsuyama y Takeo Takei. Estos hechos marcan el comienzo definitivo de una era de artistas y colaboradores asociados a la literatura infantil.
Recién iniciado un período de posguerra en el que el país transitaba a la democracia, nacieron revistas de cuentos infantiles como Kodomo no hiroba ("Plaza Infantil") y Akatombo ("La Libélula Roja"), además de un sinnúmero de pequeñas editoriales que publicaron libros ilustrados, en un intento por hacer llegar a los niños un mensaje de esperanza y de sueños para el porvenir. En un momento en que reinaban la escasez y la estricta censura y control bajo el yugo de las Fuerzas Aliadas de Ocupación, fueron escritores, ilustradores y editores los encargados de llevar la calidez a los niños del Japón, destinados a cargar con la promesa de construir una nación pacífica, una que no volvería a involucrarse jamás en una guerra.
